MEDICON VALLEY ALLIANCE BEACON INITIATIVE

Life science organizations in Medicon Valley all act in a global market where one of the most important factors for success is the ability to attract and retain talented life science experts. In order to succeed in this, there is a need for an internationally competitive research and training environment based on private and public forces. The region is now at a significant turning point thanks to recent massive investments in both infrastructure and research related to life sciences. The recent investments are unsurpassed by any time period in the region’s history. Examples are the establishment of ESS, Max VI and Medicon Village research facilities in Lund, and the BRIC and Novo Nordisk Center for protein research in Copenhagen, that have support from large regional and national foundations.

Despite an impressive development, the region is not yet a truly global leading life science cluster. No common strategy involving all major stakeholders in the region has been defined. We must now make sure to fully exploit this great potential in order to create a sustainable growth within life science in our region. In order to do so, a common vision and strategy for Medicon Valley is needed.

MVA has in collaboration with Invest in Skåne, and financed by EU InterReg funds, initiated the 3-year project "Medicon Valley - ett life science cluster i världsklass".  The aim is to implement a common strategy for enhanced attractiveness and growth in Medicon Valley, based on existing regional strongholds and meeting future challenges. The outcome of the project is on top of a common strategy, the concrete implementation of selected stronghold areas, what we call Beacons, that can be further developed into world class centers of excellence that will attract global talents and investors and contribute to a world class life science environment.

As a member-financed organization encompassing both public and private life-science stakeholders, MVA's role is to facilitate and stimulate the creation of life science Beacons and lead the preparation of a detailed vision, business case and implementation plan for selected Beacons. Crucial to success will be the involvement and engagement of the life science community as well as actors from other areas and disciplines that can cross-fertilize with life science leading to new innovations and added value.
