Probi Enters Immune Market after Successful Common Cold Clinical Study

26 August - Shorter common cold periods and a strong reduction of cold symptoms. These were the key results in an extensive clinical study with a new product developed in-house by Probi. The study outcome means Probi will extend its product portfolio and enter the large market for products targeting the immune system. The company expects that initial product launches will take place in 2009.

ADAGIO Trial Results Show Azilect Slows Progression of Parkinson's Disease

26 August - Lundbeck's partner Teva Pharmaceutical Industries has announced that results of the phase III ADAGIO trial were have showed that Parkinson's disease patients who took Azilect 1mg tablets once-daily upon entry into the trial, demonstrated a significant improvement compared to those who initiated therapy with the drug nine months later.

Genmab Announces Upcoming Ofatumumab Studies

25 August - Genmab have announced plans to begin four studies of ofatumumab in chronic lymphocytic leukemia and follicular non-Hodgkin's lymphomathis year.

  • A Phase III CLL front line chlorambucil combination
  • A Phase II CLL ofatumumab retreatment and maintenance treatment study
  • A Phase II NHL ofatumumab retreatment and maintenance study
  • A Phase I study in Japan

Week 33

Highly Positive Results Achieved with ALK's New Tablet Vaccine against House Dust Mite Allergy

13 August - A clinical study of ALK's tablet vaccine against house dust mite allergy showed an effect that was highly statistically significant and met its primary endpoint. The study showed a 50% reduction in the use of asthma medicine. Moreover, the study demonstrated that the tablet vaccine is well tolerated and has a good safety profile.

Lundbeck Abandon Development of Flurizan

13 August - Lundbeck and the partner Myriad have decided to completely abandon the development of the drug Flurizan for treatment of patients with mild Alzheimers disease.

NeuroSearch Reports Final Results from the TIPO-2 Study with Tesofensine in Obesity

11 August - NeuroSearch has concluded the detailed evaluation of the data from TIPO-2, a human metabolic study with tesofensine, a monoamine reuptake inhibitor, in development for the treatment of obesity and type 2 diabetes. The results show that tesofensine significantly increases feelings of satiety and decreases the desire to eat while impacting favourably also on energy expenditure and fat metabolism in overweight and obese subjects.

Week 32

Genzyme and Isis Begin Second Phase 3 Trial of Mipomersen

6 August - Genzyme Corp. and Isis Pharmaceuticals have announced that they have begun a Phase 3 study of mipomersen in patients with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia, a genetic disorder that causes exceptionally high levels of LDL cholesterol. It is the first of four new trials the companies plan to initiate by the end of this year.
