First Statin Clinical Trial Results

A clinical study on the treatment of heart failure with statins by AstraZeneca resulted in decreased atherosclerosis difficulties and provided information about heart failure care.

New data from the CORONA study presented at the American Heart Association 2007 Scientific Sessions in Orlando, US, showed that adding a statin to optimised heart failure treatment did not significantly improve the prognosis for patients with advanced heart failure because it could not reverse or prevent the deterioration of a failing heart.

However, it did show that treatment with statins resulted in fewer hospitalizations and atherosclerosic difficulties.

John Kjekshus, Professor at the Rikshospitalet Univeristy Hospital in Oslo, Norway, comments that these findings suggest that death in heart failure patients is not related to atherosclerosic events, but rather a degeneration of the heart muscle with irreparable damages.

CORONA is a part of AstraZeneca’s extensive GALAXY clinical trials programme, designed to address important unanswered questions in statin research.
