: MVA HIGHLIGHT: Food vs. Drugs initiative

by Anette Birck, Project Manager, Medicon Valley Academy

AB

Medicon Valley Academy and Øresund Food Network have launched a unique partnership "Food vs. Drugs" focusing on the use of food products in disease prevention and treatment. The background to this is the sky-high rise in society's health expenses and the need for new solution models or maybe even a new health care paradigm for solving future health problems.

The kick-off event was two Food vs. Drugs sessions at BioTech Forum Science Conference looking at 1) the scientific basis in preventive medicine with special emphasis on food; and 2) strategic considerations from a scientific, social and economical viewpoint. The discussion from these sessions will continue at workshops during spring 2005. The workshops will take their starting point in the four disease complexes: cardiovascular diseases, osteoporosis, under nutrition and obesity. If you are interested in joining the network and participating in one or more of these workshops, please let us know.

The next event will be a seminar on "The need of enriched foods and food supplements" taking place Thursday 16 December at the University of Copenhagen. Enriched food has recently, again, become a hot topic in the public debate, especially in Denmark. The seminar will present the current knowledge on food enrichment and food supplements and touch upon questions like: Do we need such products? Is it risky to eat them? Why are there such a big difference in attitude to these questions/problems in Denmark and Sweden?
