MVA Gathers Forces to Boost Medtech in Medicon Valley

Medtech companies and entrepreneurs in Medicon Valley face numerous challenges that can be addressed on a regional level. To boost the medtech industry, MVA now joins forces with our medtech members to further strengthen the cluster and its visibility. The first step was taken at a recent MVA strategy group meeting held with several medtech members.

The Medicon Valley region is home of successful and vital R&D within medical devices and technology. Academic research as well as industrial development and production are in many areas of world class standard and leaders of their league. Large companies, as well as many smaller and medium sized companies, perform outstanding R&D and work hard to develop new product innovations to help patients live better lives.

The medtech sector encompasses a wide variety of technologies and therapeutic areas. Despite the differences in core technology, companies and entrepreneurs face the same challenges. They all need to comply with the needs of customers and patients, obtain regulatory approval, and agree wtih the national price- and reimbursement authorities in order to secure a succesful market launch.

Medtech Clustering in Medicon Valley

With our experience from building a strong cluster within biotech and pharma in Medicon Valley, MVA now joins forces with our medtech members to, once and for all, fully include medtech in our cluster development activities and achieve a cluster including all aspects of life science (pharma, biotech and medtech). By doing so, the region's medtech industry will be further strengthened and achieve even greater visibility. One of the goals is to build bridges between medtech, biotech and pharma to boost the development of new innovative combination products.

A first step towards a joint initiative was taken at a MVA strategy group meeting held in March with several medtech members. We received great input and engagement for the upcoming work, which now continues towards defining our medtech strongholds and how to develop them further. The ambition is to launch the medtech strategy & actions at an open workshop in early spring 2009.

We also wish to strengthen our focus on medtech in the MVA Board. For this reason, the MVA Board of Directors has proposed Managing Director of Medicoindustrien Jens Kristian Gøtrik to the Board and this will be finally decided at the General Assembly on 24 April.

MVA Warmly Welcomes All Input from Any Members

Medical technology is by definition a cross-border science that integrates medical knowledge and know-how with clever engineering. As an example, the Master of Science programme ‘Medicin og Teknologi', run in collaboration by DTU and the Medical Faculty at Copenhagen University, is one of the most popular programmes at DTU. The interest demonstrated by young talents is very promising for the future.

We believe that Medicon Valley has a solid base for becoming one of the top ten life science clusters in the world, encompassing strong medtech competences. We encourage all members who have an interest in our medtech activities to participate. Don't hesitate to contact us with project ideas, input or questions.

We are looking forward to hearing from you.
