Main research is the regulation of insulin secretion. Studies combine basic science with clinically oriented research to focus on this insulin secretion, with the special aim to understand the regulation and mechanism of normal insulin secretion and the mechanisms and consequences of failing insulin secretion as an important pathogenetic factor in diabetes. Furthermore, studies aim to develop new targets and compounds for the treatment of typ 2 diabetes. Particular emphases have been focused on the incretin hormone GLP-1 and inhibition of dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) as a novel treatment of type 2 diabetes.
