The European Commission has praised Lund as one of the top locations for biotechnology research in Europe, raising hopes that the city’s new stem cell center will land a share of a planned EUR 17 million grant from Brussels to the industry.
European research commissioner Philippe Busquin said: “Lund is one of the best centers in the world for research into Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimers.”
His comments, made in Stockholm while visiting the annual Nobel Prize banquet, came in response to questions about how Europe intends to bridge the increasing divide between its prowess in scientific research and that of America.
Busquin is currently considering 12,000 applications for grants from the EUR 17 million fund set up by the European Commission to fund scientific research programs in Europe.
Some EUR 11 million of this is expected to go to stem cell research, an area in which Sweden is considered to be among the international leaders.
